Exercise Physiology


Exercise Physiologists (EPs) are university qualified allied health professionals who specialise in the delivery of exercise, lifestyle and behavioural modification programs for the prevention and management of chronic disease and injury.

Exercise Physiologists are accredited allied health professionals who are involved in the management of a wide range of conditions including musculoskeletal disorders, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, persistent pain, cancer, neurological conditions and Mental Health.
Exercise Physiologists provide individualised assessment and management programs and are also involved in many exercise groups across the organisation. Exercise Physiology may include:

  • Strength and Conditioning Programs
  • Aquatic Therapy
  • Integration to community exercise groups and programs
  • Cardiovascular Fitness
  • Return to Sport Programs
  • Balance Training
  • Health Coaching

What to expect from the service?

Exercise Physiologists are part of the Northern Health Physiotherapy Department and work closely with the physiotherapy team. The team reports to the Physiotherapy Clinical Leaders under the leadership of the Associate Director Allied Health -Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology.
Exercise Physiology offers individual patient assessment and management, and also provides an extensive cohort of group programs. Each department has a well-equipped gymnasium and Broadmeadows Hospital also operates a hydrotherapy pool for aquatic programs. Exercise Physiologists work closely with other Allied Health professionals and General Practitioners to best improve a patient’s health.

Exercise Physiologists (EPs) also work within Mental Health teams on Inpatient Units, Community teams and the Community Care units. The EPs in mental health aim to increase the physical activity rates, health literacy and motivation of clients to enable them to make positive lifestyle changes.
