At Northern Health, we are proud to offer culturally safe and supportive care through our Narrun Wilip-giin Aboriginal Support Unit, meaning Spirit Keepers in Woi Wurrung language. This dedicated service is here to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and carers throughout their hospital journey.

How We Support You

Our team is committed to:

  • Ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have access to all Northern Health services.
  • Helping patients understand and navigate the hospital system.
  • Providing emotional and cultural support during your time with Northern Health.
  • Connecting patients with community services and supports upon discharge.
  • Promoting a culturally safe, welcoming, and respectful environment.
  • Identifying and addressing barriers to accessing care.
  • Building strong relationships with Aboriginal communities.

Reconciliation Action Plan
2024–2026

Our second Reconciliation Action Plan is shaped by the voices and contributions of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander partners. This plan reflects what matters most to the community and strengthens our commitment to reconciliation.

What to Expect from the Service

Patients can meet with an Aboriginal Liaison Officer (ALO) during their hospital stay. The ALO can:

  • Be present during medical discussions with your care team.
  • Advocate on your behalf and provide cultural support.
  • Liaise with family and carers at your request.
  • Assist with referrals to internal and external services.

Please note: The ALO service is available during business hours only. It is not available after hours, on weekends, or public holidays.

Do I Need to Bring Anything?

No items are required for appointments with the ALO. Simply let a staff member know you’d like to speak with the Aboriginal Liaison Officer.
