Unit 2 is a 30-bed unit. Most of our patients transfer from TNH Epping campus.
The purpose of the Rehabilitation Unit is to provide inpatient rehabilitation services for adults experiencing disability following acute or chronic illness or injury. The unit has a particular focus on the management of neurological and orthopaedic conditions. We also support patients with access to NDIS and complex discharge planning.
Rehabilitation nurses help those affected by acute or chronic illness, disability or handicap to adapt to reduced levels of ability or regain their maximum level of independence.
Unit 2 provides seamless interdisciplinary care to rehabilitation patients and we are a part of Northern Health.
The Rehabilitation inpatient unit is a level 2-service provider, and is located within Broadmeadows Health Service as part of Northern Health. The service operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week and accepts patients aged from 16 years. The patient mix includes those who are recovering from orthopaedic surgery, and neurological events such as stroke.
Formal therapy services are provided Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings. We are supported by allied health. There are two Consultants, a Registrar, HMO and an intern to support the unit. Nursing staffing levels are based on current EBA ratios but also reflect patient dependency and acuity as required. Inpatients will receive their therapy either in the individual therapy departments and or on the ward Nursing staff use a buddy nursing model of care to provide care to our patients who often require complex care due to their neurological condition.
What to expect from the service?
We have a case conference once a week where the clinical team discusses each patient and develops an overall plan with realistic goals, including a probable discharge date. Also, at this meeting a Key Contact Person will be appointed. This team member will make him or herself known to you and will be the person who will assist with the coordination of your care in hospital and see that your plans for discharge are progressing to completion.
Our team is made up of nursing staff, medical staff, ward clerk, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, pharmacists, dieticians, speech pathologists, neuropsychology, psychology, podiatry, orthotics and allied health assistants.
Environment and Support: The 30-bed acute unit provides a safe, motivating space with gym facilities and communal areas. Patients are encouraged to practice being independent within their limits throughout their admission with the support and supervision of skilled staff.
We encourage all patients to get dressed during the day and participate in therapy.
Daily Routine: Therapy sessions are tailored to your needs and scheduled from Monday to Friday. You should be dressed in home clothes for therapy to simulate real-life activities and boost confidence. Physiotherapy enhances strength and balance via exercises and reconditioning. Occupational therapy focuses on practical skills like dressing and cooking. Speech pathology supports communication or swallowing if required. Nursing offers 24/7 medical care, medications, and wound management.
Discharge Preparation: Comprehensive support equips you for safe community reintegration, with follow-up outpatient or home services arranged. Expect empowerment and steady gains toward independence.
