The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Northern Healthis an 18-bed CICM and ANZICS-accredited serviceproviding advanced care for over 1,200 critically ill patients annually. Supported by a skilled multidisciplinary team, the ICU delivers specialised therapies and hospital-wide outreach while fostering excellence, education, and innovation in critical care practice.

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Northern Health is a state-of-the-art, 18-bed critical care service accredited by CICM and ANZICS, where clinical excellence meets compassionate care. Each year, the unit provides advanced treatment to more than 1,200 critically ill patients, offering specialised care for complex medical, surgical, and emergency cases.

Staffed by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team of Intensive Care Specialists, Critical Care Registered Nurses, and allied health professionals, the ICU delivers expert, patient-centred care around the clock. Beyond the bedside, the team leads vital hospital-wide outreach programs, including the ICU Liaison Nurse service, Medical Emergency Team (MET) response, Parenteral Nutrition support, and Tracheostomy follow-up, ensuring continuity of critical care across Northern Health. As an accredited training and education centre, Northern Health ICU is committed to developing the next generation of critical care professionals. The unit fosters continuous learning, innovation, and leadership through structured education, research engagement, and professional development opportunities grounded in evidence-based practice.

Our ICU provides 24-hour specialised care for critically ill patients and offers around-the-clock access for family and friends to visit or call, recognising the vital role that loved ones play in the healing and recovery process.

Our 18-bed ICU is staffed by a highly skilled team of doctors, critical care nurses, and allied health professionals who work together to provide round-the-clock monitoring and advanced medical support. We understand that this can be an overwhelming time, so our team is here to communicate clearly, listen to your concerns, and involve you in decisions about care wherever possible.

Beyond the walls of the ICU, our dedicated Liaison Nurses and Medical Emergency Team (MET) help ensure that patients continue to receive safe, coordinated care throughout their hospital journey. The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Northern Health delivers advanced critical care therapies, including invasive and non-invasive ventilation, renal replacement therapy, and comprehensive haemodynamic monitoring.

Our multidisciplinary team provides hospital-wide support through the ICU Liaison Nurse service and Medical Emergency Team (MET), ensuring seamless coordination and excellence in patient care. As an accredited teaching and training unit, the ICU is committed to developing future healthcare professionals through structured education and mentorship. The unit supports the professional growth of medical, nursing, and allied health staff via the Supported Transition to Excellence in Practice (STEP) program, the Postgraduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing, and CICM Phases 0–2 training, while also offering Anaesthetic, Paediatric, and Medical rotations for trainees.
