Sleep Medicine


The Department of Sleep Medicine at the Northern Hospital provides sleep tests and runs outpatient clinics for people with sleep-related medical conditions.

We provide the following outpatient services:

  • Insomnia Clinic – management of diagnosed chronic insomnia disorder by a team of different health professionals
  • Sleep Testing – monitors how you sleep using sensors to diagnose sleep-related medical conditions.
  • Sleep Clinic – assessment and management of various sleep conditions including obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
  • Sleep Comprehensive Care (SCC) Clinic – sets up patients with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and provides other therapies for treatment of breathing problems in sleep.

What to expect from the service?

You will be assessed by one of our specialist doctors and we will organise appropriate tests relevant to your condition. You will be a provided a treatment plan which will also be sent to your referring doctor in a timely manner. We can also provide interpreter services should you require one.

The Department of Respiratory Medicine provides sleep services to inpatients and outpatients, including sleep studies, and management of all sleep disorders including sleep disordered breathing, insomnia, and narcolepsy. Our 6-bed sleep centre offers a range of sleep testing including diagnostic polysomnography, maintenance of wakefulness testing, mean sleep latency testing, and treatment review studies.

How to Refer

Urgent and complex referrals can be discussed with the Sleep Registrar by calling Northern Health switchboard

Acutely unwell patients should be directed to the nearest Emergency Department.
